Scratching the Surface of the B&W CM-7

Massive binding posts and unique flow-portB&W's new CM series holds within technological achievements akin to the 800 series products of the 1990s yet they look every bit the glamourous movie star with little else to show for it. Along with David Tubby of B&W's Australian distributor, Convoy International, we casually popped-apart a CM7 to see what lurks below the surface.

The CM7 is the first of two 3-way speakers in the CM series. At $2,999 it sports a 1" alloy tweeter, 5" Kevlar  Midrange driver and a 6" Kevlar and Paper cone bass driver. The sound is smooth and clean, lively, open and expansive and without any obvious 'grain' or 'glare' rising through the midrange into the high frequencies. With the drivers out and on the counter, we can begin to see why this new speaker series is such an impressive performer.

ARCAM 'Get Smart' in Geelong

Andy Moore of prestigious UK hi-fi manufacturer ARCAM visited our store yesterday.Arcam

Whilst he surveyed the land, and told us how much he loved visiting Australia, Andy explained one of ARCAM's more mysterious technologies: the Mask Of Silence. Famously, unsuccessful as a Cone Of Silence in Get Smart, Andy explained that the Mask Of Silence very successfully enables the most critical components within any ARCAM FMJ product to operate at their very best by vastly reducing the effects of EMI and RF interference.

Award Winning Rega P3-24 Turntable Sees a Make Over with PSU and Piano Laquer Finishes

The Rega P3 - 24 COLOURS

P3-24 What Hi*Fi 2007 & 2008 Winner An impressive range of piano Laquer finishes
The inspiration for the design of the P3 - 24 did not come from an evolution of the last P3 2000 model. Rather it came from revisiting the virtues of the original planar 3 turntable. These virtues gave Rega their design brief:

· No unnecessary frills.

· High performance.

· Outstanding musical sound performance for cost price.

· Rugged reliability

· High quality components

· A long life time

Most areas of the turntable have changed, let's start with the plinth.

The Plinth

The new plinth whilst being slim and attractive, offers high levels of rigidity by using phenolic resin laminates, with a high quality edging. It is a considerable improvement over the current P2 (and even the standard P3-24).

Beyonwiz Firmware Update

Beyonwiz released new Firmware in June 2009. This can be downloaded from their website http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/download.asp and installed using a USB key. After doing the update it is best to do a factory reset as well, which means rescanning the channels and resetting time etc, plus resetting your record timers. It doesn't lose any recordings from your hard drive.
